Getting a mortgage with bad credit

Can I still get a mortgage if I have bad credit?

There isn’t one rule for all when it comes to having a poor credit history (also known as bad credit or adverse credit history), but in our experience of giving mortgage advice we can say that it is definitely still worth talking to us as there are options out there!

We understand that sometimes due to circumstances outside of your control, things can happen which mean you may have struggled to manage your credit commitments, leaving you with a lower credit score or credit issues.

Since the ‘credit crunch’ of 2008, it has been a lot more difficult for those people with poor credit to be able to apply for a mortgage successfully. When we say ‘poor credit’ what we mean is that you may have one or more of the following:

  • County Court Judgements (CCJs)
  • Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVAs)
  • Bankruptcy
  • Missed payments on a mortgage, loan, credit card or other credit
  • A low credit score on your credit report

If you think you may have any of these things but you aren’t sure, a good start would be to get hold of your credit report by signing up to on of the free credit report services offered by Equifax (ClearScore) or Call Credit (Noddle) – once you have these we can go through them with you.

So if you think that you might have any adverse credit that will affect your ability to get a mortgage, please feel free to give Stuart our mortgage adviser a call on 01386 800500, or pop into our office at Office 9, 91 High Street, Evesham. We will be more than happy to talk through your circumstances and give you an idea of whether we think that we can help you, and even if we can’t at the moment we may be able to give you some tips on what you can do to improve your chances of being eligible in the not too distant future.

If you aren’t able to get to Evesham, we can also come and visit you at home, we cover Evesham and Pershore as well as all the surrounding villages and are happy to help – don’t forget we don’t charge anything for having our initial meeting regardless of whether we are able to help you or not.
